I've been thinking for a while now that I need to be more careful about what I'm eating. Especially with a love of baking, home cooking and eating out, It's very difficult to know where to cut down without cutting yourself off from social events that all seem to revolve around food and drink. Hands up - my downfall is snacking. The main issue being TV time with my other half in the evenings. We'll settle down for a film or our favourite show with a sharing bag of M&Ms and, before I know it, we've inhaled the whole lot! There is no way that I could do the "if you don't buy it you won't eat it" thing because everybody has a bad day...or just an incessant need for some chocolate.
That's also why I'm not going on a "diet", just being more food-conscious, and I really think that is a much better way of looking at it. If I want to eat something less healthy, I will eat it, because forcing myself not to will just get me down. It's also about using positive phrasing around the whole process e.g. rather than thinking "I'm not allowed to eat that", think of it as "I'm choosing not to eat that" or "I want to eat something good for me". I've made the mistake before of telling people around me that I'm trying to lose a little bit of weight and what I've found is that it puts far too much pressure on. If you have told people that's what you're doing, you won't be able to enjoy indulgences without feeling judged for it. Instead I now say that I am just trying to eat a bit better or more healthily.
One part of my day that I can definitely improve on is breakfast, as I've been super lazy with my food choices recently. I'm not a massive fan of cereal and even the healthier seeming ones contain a very high level of sugar, and often nuts which isn't great for someone with a nut allergy! I searched the internet for some ideas but found nothing that suited my dietary requirements so I've made a little list of some great ideas for anyone who might be having the same trouble.
Avocado on Toast
I know that everybody already raves about avocado on toast but I'm a bit of a newbie. My dad re-introduced me to it a few weeks ago (I tried it when I was little and was not a fan!) and it has opened my eyes to so many more healthy options. Simply mash half an avocado in a bowl and spread on toast with some salt and black pepper. You may think that toast isn't the best idea if you're trying to eat well but I think that, if you're going to have bread, just make sure it's a nice quality loaf and have less of it. Like I said before, cutting out all the carbs and the sugar etc. will just get you down!
Passion Fruit Rice Pudding
This is one for the weekends when you have a little more time on your side! For this I used a shop bought rice pudding but you could definitely make it yourself. It gets a little trickier when extracting the passion fruit juice. I scraped out the seeds into a sieve above a jug and scraped with a spoon until enough juice had come out. It may not look like much, but the flavour is so intense that you only need a little bit of the juice stirred into the rice pudding to jazz up your Saturday morning!
Honey & Blueberry Porridge
Porridge isn't everybody's favourite but it is one of the absolute best options for staying fuller for longer. This has been a massive help as it stops me from snacking between meals. To keep it interesting, add healthy toppings of your choice to your porridge bowl like blueberries and honey.
Mango & Passion Fruit Smoothie
This option makes a great breakfast or healthy snack. Many shop bought smoothies have a load of sugar in them so homemade is a fab way to go. Just blend up fresh mango with a little orange juice, some passion fruit juice and frozen yogurt. Pop it in a beautiful glass and TA-DA!
I may have been making these look prettier for the photos but I would definitely recommend putting your food in sweet little bowls. Sitting down with lovely looking food makes you feel happy and you forget that it's "the healthy option". Especially if it's in a little bowl that fits right in your hands. Another thing I've found is that you notice the amount of food too. I decanted the shop bought rice pudding into my gorgeous Anthropologie bowl and it looked like so much more food than when it was hidden away in the little plastic pot.
